The importance of proper heart health is one thing all physicians can agree on. The heart is essential to the very essence of life. This important central organ pumps blood throughout the body supplying oxygen and nutrients and removes carbon dioxide and other harmful wastes, making every activity possible.

But do some people find it so difficult to maintain proper heart health? Most individuals are not incorporating enough exercise into their daily routines and are introducing unhealthy substances (such as foods, drugs, toxins, etc.) into their bodies causing the heart muscle to have to pump double-time to support their physical needs. Here a few quick tips for maintaining a healthy heart.

Take Short Walks
Not big into strenuous exercises or going to the gym? Try a brisk 10-minute walk today. It’s a great way to start for those who don’t exercise at all and allows for everyone to add more movement into their daily routines.

Make Breakfast a Priority
Start your day off with the proper fuel. Because of the fasting done during a proper night’s rest, the body needs to replenish nutrients and hydrate itself. Fruit, or a serving of whole grains, such as oatmeal or whole-wheat toast, can go a long way toward helping the body repair and recharge.

Try Some Nuts
Did you know that nuts, such as walnuts, peanuts, and almonds, are good for your heart? Most nuts contain unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) which have been shown to lower bad cholesterol levels. Grab a handful of these tasty proteins, instead of chips or other sugary treats, the next time you want a fulfilling snack.

One Fish, Two Fish
Try substituting fish, and other seafood, a few times a week in the place of red meat. The nutrients found in seafood help positively influence the brain, the heart, and your scale!

Take a Deep Breath
Remembering to take a few deep breaths regularly throughout the day helps relieve the stress you encounter and help you relax. This relaxation can help lower blood pressure which does wonders for the continuously pumping heart.
