
Once we get settled in at our desks, many of us don’t get up unless we need to go to the bathroom, get some water, or pick up something from the printer. However, this sedentary lifestyle is dangerous to your health. In fact, if you’re sedentary, “you face a higher risk of muscular-skeletal disorders, obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and more, even if you work out regularly.” That’s a scary thought. You could be putting yourself at a greater risk of developing health issues just by sitting too much!
So, what can you do about it? To start, make more time to move. Taking breaks from your desk is beneficial for your waistline, joints, and even eyes. When you stare at the computer too much it can result in tension headaches and tired eyes. Plus, sitting too long can make weight loss difficult, and it can be hard on your joints, especially if you have poor posture. Try to take a break twice every hour. That may seem like a lot, but even if you can just take a moment to stand up and stretch, it can be helpful. If you can’t commit to twice an hour, get up at least once every hour.
Make a commitment to a better lifestyle in general. Choose healthier foods that make it easier to keep the extra inches off your waistline, since obesity can contribute to a number of health problems. Remember, it’s much easier to gain weight when your job requires a lot of sitting.
Committing to a few changes can improve your health and reduce your risk of developing issues down the line. Take breaks more and eat better. Even just these two small changes can make a big difference. Also, don’t forget to make an appointment with your chiropractor to keep everything aligned correctly. Sitting all day can impact your alignment and cause more aches and pains.
